History

Hawthorne was the creation of Colonial Penn Insurance Group, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), and the National Retired Teachers Association (NRTA). While Hawthorne was designed with careful thought given to location, climate, personal safety, transportation, medical services, comfort, recreation, and cultural and educational activities, we think our residents are our greatest success. Hawthorne is noted for its friendly spirit and making new residents feel right at home.

After Hawthorne was established, the residents of Hawthorne worked together to purchase the community from Colonial Penn and formed a cooperative government. The developement shares all the benefits of total ownership including all common facilities, one of it’s many unique differences. Today, Hawthorne at Leesburg is a thriving community of approximately 1100 homes. It is financially sound, with no debt and over $2 million dollars of invested reserves. And still growing with the addition of over 6,500 square feet to our multi-million dollar recreational facilities. Because the funds were already in the reserves, no debt was incurred to cover the expansion – another advantage of being a resident-owned community.

A long-standing sense of community and proud traditions are guiding Hawthorne at Leesburg into the future.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Residents enjoy activities offered through chapters of organizations such as AARP, the VFW, a travel club and boat club, and participate in leisure-time, cultural, spiritual and educational events. Some groups meet for Friday and Saturday night dances, to play cards, board games, and bingo, or to celebrate shared interests through state & zone clubs, RV groups, singles groups and more. Hawthorne’s clubhouse, which can seat 1,600, has a library and areas for many activities
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
The community has a heated pool, indoor whirlpools and sauna, and hosts sporting events including softball, tennis, bocce ball, shuffleboard, putt putt golf, lawn croquet, and horseshoes. Groups often form for ballroom, tap and line dancing, Yoga, and other fitness activities.
CRAFTS AND HOBBIES
From art to woodcrafts, Hawthorne hobbyists enjoy it all. Ceramics, handwork, lapidary, quilling, quilting, and sewing are just a few of the great ways to hone your skills and delight in the company of your neighbors. Computer, garden and investment clubs offer tangible returns on the time you invest.

THE ARTS

Hawthorne puts a premium on cultural activities. Enjoy a concert performance by the Hawthorne orchestra or the upbeat rhythms of our own kitchen band. Barbershop Quartets, the Monday Musicales, a chorus, and other groups comprised of residents, make joyful music throughout the community. Some of our residents share their artistic skills through fine arts clubs, working in media including oils, watercolors, clay, stained glass and gold wire.
